Can't reduce impact of a book by banning it: French Ambassador
Press Trust of India New Delhi In the wake of the Penguin's decision to withdraw Wendy Doniger's book on Hinduism, French Ambassador Francois Richier today said banning books may not be the best course of action if the intention is to reduce their impact.
He was responding to a question at a discussion organised by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), where he said that banning a book may not be the right decision if the intention is to reduce the impression it has on the people.
Later, speaking to PTI, Richier said that he had not read the Doniger's book but had seen a few articles about the issue.
"Everybody has the right to challenge the content of a book and the publisher has the right not to publish and the result of the whole story is that everybody is aware of existence of the book which nobody knew before. So who is achieving his purpose, I don't know," he further said.
