Canadian delegation evinces interest in education, health

During the meeting, Bahuguna said a working group of senior officials would be constituted to explore the areas where Canada could make investment and do the necessary homework for the purpose, said an official release.

Stewart told Bahuguna that Ice Hockey was very popular in Canada and expressed his desire to organize Ice Hockey tournaments in Uttarakhand.

He also evinced his interest in investing in urban development and tourism sectors.

Canada could also support Uttarakhand in establishing an adventure sports academy, Beck said.

The Chief Minister also apprised Beck of the policies of his government under which the emphasis was being laid on the participation of private sector in the state.

Stating that the natural resources were in abundance in Uttarakhand, Bahuguna said as home to char dhams, Piran Kaliyar, Nanakmatta and several other religious places, the hill state attract lakhs of pilgrims from home and abroad every year.

He said besides having rivers, Bugyals (Pastures), snow-clad mountains and educational institutes, Uttarakhand is also abode of healthy environment and educated people with 85 per cent literacy rate.

"Uttarakhand has lots of potential in tourism, energy, adventure sports, food processing and industries both small and big," he said, adding, the state government was taking several steps to encourage investment in these key areas.

Bahuguna also apprised the High Commissioner about state's richness in water and said the state had great power generating potential.

He said the state government is conducting mapping of areas having potential for hydro-power projects through IIT Roorkee, which would also study the effect the hydro-power projects on environment.

After completion of mapping, the State Government would invite proposals for power generation from private sectors, he said.
