Canadian navy officer sentenced to 20 years for spying
Press Trust of IndiaOttawa, Feb 8 (AFP) A Canadian navy officer was today sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay a steep fine for leaking secrets to Russia. Sub-Lieutenant Jeffrey Delisle pleaded guilty in October to breach of trust and passing information to a foreign government, but it is still not known what, if any, damage was caused to Canada or the US by the security lapse. He was the first person to be charged under a new Canadian security and intelligence law, which was beefed up after the September 11, 2001, attacks in the US. In addition to two decades behind bars, the judge also slapped the 41-year-old with a USD 111,523 fine an amount equal to what he earned while spying. In a police interrogation video released last week, Delisle said marital woes led him to betray his country.(AFP) KKM KKM 02090138 NNNN
