"Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Winnipeg is on Mumbai visit from May 13 to 17, during which it will carry out professional interaction and Passage Exercise with Indian ships," a Defence spokesperson said today.
It follows the visit of Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan to India last month, the spokesperson added.
HMCS Winnipeg is commanded by Commander Jeff Hutchinson and has a complement of 260 personnel (30 officers and 230 sailors).
Commander Hutchinson interacted with Rear Admiral S Mahindru, Flag Officer Maharashtra Naval Area, and other senior officers of the Western Naval Command, he said.
During his visit, Sajjan had highlighted areas of congruence between India and Canada and the need to further enhance cooperation between both nations and continuing the current level of military interactions and the possibilities of increased cooperation, the spokesperson said.
"India and Canada are poised to enhance defence cooperation in fields of counter-terrorism, cold climate warfare, peace-keeping and Naval cooperation," he said.
