Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today underlined the need for coordinated efforts by government and private sector to ensure early detection and affordable treatment of cancer, a leading cause of the death around the world.
"Medical fraternity, public, media and government need to put in strong efforts to counter the dreaded disease," the chief minister said at the inauguration of Park Cancer Hospital in West Delhi.
Emphasising upon the importance of early detection of cancer, she said that a majority of patients in India ignore the early symptoms and usually land up for treatment at very late or near terminal stage of the diseases when the results are not so rewarding.
She said, "the negative image about cancer leads to inertia and inaction and the stake-holder should come forward to disseminate the message of early detection and overcoming the disease."
Dikshit said the country is all set to become a hub for medical tourism as a number of government and private agencies have been coordinating efforts to offer medical tourism facilities.
