Police resorted to cane-charge to disperse Congress workers who staged a protest against the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Damoh town during a function to unveil the statue of Rani Avantibai.
The incident took place in Jatashankar area.
Terming the cane-charge as "barbaric", Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Ajay Singh alleged that police used force against the Congress workers who were protesting silently. "It was an attempt to throttle the democracy," he said.
Singh also alleged that workers of BJP and its youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha also joined police in attacking the Congressmen who were protesting against the shifting of the statue site from Railway Station square to Jatashankar area near a cremation ground.
They were also protesting large-scale irregularities in the implementation of Atal Jyoti Abhiyan aimed at providing 24X7 power supply in rural areas, he said.
