The accused Vikas was caught on a tip-off received by the police from Pitampura on June 16. He was riding in a car that he had stolen from Inderpuri area, said Vijayanta Arya, Additional DCP (northwest).
He adopted a peculiar modus operandi for stealing cars.
He used to visit luxury car showrooms as a dummy customer and spot new vehicles which were ready to be delivered. After that on the pretext of checking the interior of the vehicle, he used to replace the reserve keys of the car.
The accused was involved in eight cases of auto lifting in Haryana. He was arrested in cases in Chandigarh and Panchkula but was released on bail.

He was also arrested in connection with a case of murder in Srinivaspuri in Delhi in 1998.
He had shifted his residence to Faridabad and did not appear in trial in any of the above cases and was proclaimed offender in all these cases by the concerned courts, she said.
A scrap dealer, Ompal, who used to purchase the stolen vehicles has also been arrested, she added.
