The calf was suspected to have died a few days ago and people spotted it yesterday, Telkoi forest range officer B K Mallick said, adding the exact cause of its death would be known after the postmortem report is available.

Forest officials said a 15-member elephant herd is moving in the area. They have damaged a lot of crops and injured one person in the past one week.

Meanwhile, condition of another elephant calf which was being treated at the Champua forest range is improving, divisional forest officer Keonjhar A K Nayak said.

The calf had sustained injuries after being hit by a train a few days ago. Two elephants were killed in the mishap and another injured pachyderm died later.
