Its lower jaw, upper canines and four of its claws were cut off by someone using a sharp instrument, officials said.

The body was found near a 'nallah' by a forest guard during a routine patrol.

Central Chanda Forest Division's Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Madan Kulkarni, however, brushed aside chances of poaching.

A search has been launched to trace those who removed the animal's body parts, he said.

An autopsy was conducted and the leopardess was found to be suffering from severe abdominal infection, which may have led to her death, officials said.

The exact cause will be ascertained only after receiving the viscera report, they said.

The presence of a leopardess and her two cubs was detected in the area earlier, and the carcass could be of one of the cubs, they added.
