Cargo traffic at major ports increase by 5.2 pc in Apr-Jul

Cargo traffic at state-run major ports increased by 5.2 per cent to 212.78 million tonnes in April-July against 202.11 million tonnes in the same period last year.
"The total traffic handled at major ports during April to July, 2016, was 212.78 MT against 202.11 MT handled during the corresponding period of previous year," Ministry of Shipping said in a statement.
During the period between April to July, 2016 Kandla Port handled the highest volume of traffic ie 35.85 MTs, followed by Paradip with 28.65 million tonnes (MT), JNPT with 20.93 MT and Vishakhapatnam at 20.90 MT.
Among the commodities, share of petroleum, oil and lubricants was maximum with 31.98 per cent, it added.
Six ports namely Paradip, Visakhapatnam, VO Chidambaranar, Cochin, Mormugao and Kandla registered positive growth, the statement said.
"Mormugao Port registered growth of 85.64 (per cent), Paradip stood second with growth of 17.75 per cent, the third spot was taken by Vishakhapatnam at 13.75 per cent, Kandla Port registered growth of 8.12 per cent followed by Cochin and V O Chidambaranar at 5.42 and 0.02 per cent repectively.

The astounding growth rate of Murmagao Port was due to increase in iron ore and thermal and steam coal traffic.
Six ports registered negative growth namely Kamarakar Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Kolkata Port (Kolkata Dock System (KDS) + Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), Mumbai Port Trust, Chennai Port and New Manglore Port Trust.
Decline in Kamrajar Port growth was due to reduction in thermal and steam Coal traffic by 8.96 per cent followed by other miscellaneous cargo by 3.04 per cent.
