Zeta-Jones, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2003 for her part in "Chicago", says she is "absolutely terrified" by the prospect of taking part in the tribute.

While promoting her cerebral thriller "Side Effects", the actress joked she may need to try some of the pills that form the basis of the new movie to get through a live Oscars performance, reported Herald Sun.

But the 43-year-old added the musicals tribute could be "great fun".

"I don't quite know the exact capacity in which I will be at the Oscars, but I'll be there, put it that way. I don't quite know exactly what I'm doing," she said.

"X-Men" star Hugh Jackman is high on the list of those tipped to join her.

Inspired by the success of "Les Miserables", nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Actor for Jackman, the producers of the Academy Awards ceremony announced that the big night will feature a tribute to musicals from recent years including "Chicago" and "Dreamgirls".

"The musical as a motion picture genre has had a remarkable renaissance in the last decade," producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan said in a statement.

Meryl Streep, Jennifer Hudson and John Travolta are the other names rumoured to be taking part in the tribute.

It is also expected that the "Les Miserables" cast, including Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks, will perform a medley or ensemble song from the movie.

And it has been confirmed that British nominee Adele will perform her Bond theme song from "Skyfall".
