A caustic soda manufacturing plant will be set up at Vedaranyam in this district with private participation, Tamil Nadu Handlooms Minister O S Manian today said.
Speaking to reporters at Vedaranyam near here, he said former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had announced in the Assembly in 2015 that the plant would be set up in Vedaranyam and added that the government was giving shape to her announcement.
Manian further said that the plant would come up in 571 acres of land at Thennadar village in Vedaranyam.
"Along with Nagapattinam district Collector S Pazhaniswamy, I inspected a few sites for the proposed plant. The location would be finalised soon," he added.
The Minister pointed out that the plant would be set up at an estimated investment of Rs 10,000 crore with private sector participation.
"A detailed environment impact assessment has already been made and experts have said that the proposed plant will not cause any harm to the environment," he said and claimed that it would provide direct and indirect employment to over 30,000 people.
