CBI arrests BIS scientist on graft charges

CBI has arrested a scientist of the Bureau of Indian Standards for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 for not pursuing a case against an industrialist running a bottled water plant.
A CBI spokesperson said the complainant had alleged that his firm was engaged in processing and marketing of bottled water with a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
"The licence expired in April, 2014. BIS conducted a search at the processing plant of the firm which was closed. Based on the search, BIS launched prosecution against the firm before the Judicial Magistrate, Wardha (Maharashtra)," the CBI spokesperson said here today.
On completion of trial, the court, however, acquitted the accused.
"The scientist, Grade-C, BIS, Nagpur had allegedly demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 50,000 failing which he threatened the complainant that he would take the case to Delhi. On negotiation, the bribe was reduced to Rs 15,000. CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe," the spokesperson said.
Search at the residential premises of the accused was conducted which led to recovery of papers pertaining to investments and some incriminating documents, the official said.
