CBI arrests Western Coalfields official in corruption case

The anti-corruption wing of CBI here today arrested an official of the Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), a fully owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited, for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a complainant.
WCL's Majri sub-area office superintendent Suryanath Singh Yadav was remanded to police custody for a day, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from complainant Ashish Devaji Rangankar, a CBI release said.
The accused had demanded illegal gratification from the complainant for forwarding the application of his sister who had applied for a WCL post on compensatory grounds, after her husband's death, the release said.
A case was registered under Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against the accused.
A search was conducted at his residential premises leading to seizure of incriminating documents, which are being scrutinised, it said.
The accused was produced before a special court judge who remanded him to custody until tomorrow, it added.
