CBI has registered a case of disproportionate assets against an Additional Commissioner of Income Tax and his wife with the husband already facing an agency probe in a bribery case.
CS Bharti, a 1994-batch Indian Revenue Service officer posted at Gandhinagar in Gujarat, was arrested in March last year for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from a construction company -- Drishti Constructions -- to help it in the scrutiny and assessment of its Income Tax returns.
CBI sources said that Bharti and his wife Indu Bharti had allegedly amassed unaccounted-for-property worth several crores of rupees disproportionate to their known sources of income.
"CBI has registered a disproportionate assets case against an Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Gandhinagar, and his wife for abetting him in the said offence," according to an agency spokesperson here.
Searches have been conducted at various premises of the accused persons at Kolkata, Dehradun, New Delhi and Ahmedabad, the official added.
"Incriminating documents regarding alleged assets in the form of certain immovable property, including in the name of the wife and relatives of the accused, have been recovered during the searches. The documents are being scrutinised," CBI said.
