The issue of inadequate security measures at primary schools under North Delhi Municipal Corporation was raised today with opposition demanding to know why the school in Mangolpuri where a seven-year-old was allegedly raped has yet not been equipped with CCTV cameras.
"The deadline for installing CCTV cameras was May which was pushed to June. Now, even after schools have reopened, the cameras are yet to be installed," Leader of the Opposition Mukesh Goel said.
"Also, it was decided that the boundary wall of the school would be raised and barbed wire put up to prevent any unwanted elements from getting in. Even that has not been done yet," he said.
Goel was referring to the incident on March 1 when the minor girl was allegedly raped inside the school by an outsider. Following this, action was taken against five school staff members who were later reinstated after police failed to find the accused.
"A sum of Rs 2 crore has been set aside for installing CCTVs in schools and the tender process for the same is currently on," the education department informed the Standing Committee in reply to a short notice.
Replying to another question, officials said due to questions raised regarding the quality of Aakash tablets and the increase in cost, the corporation has abandoned the bid to get these for its students.
"The process was started for getting the tablets but after reports questioning its quality and rising costs, this scheme of the union government has not been carried forward," the education department told the Standing Committee.

Besides this, the officials also faced flak for delay in whitewashing school buildings and the fact that desks meant for schools have not yet reached their intended destination.
"About 15,600 desks are yet to be received and we have given a notice to the supplier regarding this," they said.
The corporation has also been unable to deploy security guards at all 584 schools from July 1 when schools reopened, but the Committee was assured this would happen within the next few days.
The officials said the process of appointing teachers on contract basis for 688 vacant posts will be completed by July 15.
