The Lokayukta police caught a Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax department superintendent red-handed while he accepted a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a transporter, a Lokayukta official said.
"We have caught Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax department's Superintendent Kavindra Singh Chouhan while he accepted a bribe from transporter Asgar Khan," Lokayukta Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) B S Parihar said.
The Superintendent had demanded Rs 1 lakh bribe from Khan to settle a case of payment of Rs 2.5 lakh as service tax.
The accused told the transporter that if he paid the bribe then Rs 1.5 lakh would be reduced from his service tax.
Chouhan had already taken Rs 50,000 from Khan after which the transporter tipped-off Lokayukta.
Accordingly, a trap was laid and the superintendent was caught red-handed in his office.
A case under Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against the accused official in this regard and further investigation is on.
