The West Bengal government will not withdraw the 15 companies central forces deployed in Darjeeling where the movement for Gorkhaland has been put on hold till October 20 after a series of bandhs.
"We are not withdrawing the central forces as of now," Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee told reporters after holding a video-conference with the Darjeeling administration.
The meeting was held to review the situation in the hills.
On September 10, the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee spearheading the statehood movement in the hills had decided to suspend the agitation till October 20.
The GJAC had said that it was suspending its movement till October 20 in deference to an appeal by Union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to end the indefinite agitation before tripartite talks could be held on the statehood issue.
GJM chief Bimal Gurung, who was appointed the new chairman of the GJAC, had said that it was decided to put the agitation on hold on the condition that the talks be held by October 20.
