An Uttar Pradesh minister today alleged that all Central government schemes for cleaning the Ganges was being run only on paper and there is nothing on the ground level.
"A huge amount of public money has been looted in the name of cleaning of river Ganga. Those who have committed this crime must be sent behind bars. The central schemes are run only on papers and there is noting on the ground level", Minister of State for Irrigation and PWD Surendra Patel said.
Those who have syphoned off funds meant for cleaning river Ganga are responsible for its plight as the water quality of river is very bad, he said.
"By not cleaning the river, they have hurt the sentiments of lakhs of devotees offering daily prayers to holy river," he said.
Dubbing Congress as a "party of scams", he said it has looted all the funds allotted for cleaning the river.
"I have suggested to the Government of India through Divisional Commissioner, Varanasi, for setting up small sewage treatment plants in Varanasi and other parts of the state so that the industrial effluents along with untreated sewage water can be stopped from polluting the river," he said.
