"The state government has totally failed in its duty to provide security to the people. We demand immediate intervention of the Centre to correct the unprecedented law and order problem," Mahanta told reporters here.
More than a lakh people have been affected and this is "unfortunate", he said.
"Congress government always blames former AGP regime for allegedly failing to provide security to people but what has happened now is 'a record'", he said.
"Congress is in power both in the state and the Centre. Their prime duty is to safeguard the lives of common people but they have failed to do so," he said.
A fact-finding team of AGP would visit the affected areas on July 26, he said.
