A high-powered central committee would visit the tribal district of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh to get first hand information about customary laws that deny tribal women their due share in property.
The chairperson of the committee, Pam Rajput, said they would look into the "demand and struggle of tribal women for their right to inheritance of property."
Chairing a conference on 'Status of Women in Himachal" at Himachal Pradesh University, Rajput said it had been brought to her notice that women in tribal Kinnaur district were fighting for their right to property, but were unable to build a consensus due to resistance from their male counterparts.
"Customary tribal laws deny a woman any share of property of her father or husband," she said.
The committee would delve deep into the issue and look for interventions, if required, she said.
Rajput said the 12-member committee was constituted in May this year and would submit its report on the status of women in the country to the Centre in two years' time.
"We will visit different states as regional issues are different. The purpose of our committee is to know the truth by looking beyond figures and data. Sometimes data on women issues appears impressive, but situation on the ground remains grim and goes unnoticed," she said.
