Ministry of Women and Child Development is mulling to conduct surprise checks at at least 5,000 anganwadis across the country in a bid to improve their functioning.
"Central teams will start paying surprise visits to 5,000 anganwadis. These visits are aimed at improving (functioning of) these centres," Union Minister of State Veerendra Kumar told reporters on the sidelines of a function.
When asked about the brutal killing of a student at Ryan International School in Gurugram, the minister said the government is considering a slew of measures to ensure safety of students.
"Our government is serious about the safety of children. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has already held meetings with different ministries in this regard," Kumar said.
He said the government was contemplating mandatory police verification of drivers and conductors of school buses along with staffers.
"We are also going to ensure installation of CCTV cameras in schools as well as school buses," the minister said.

Responding to a query, Kumar said Narendra Modi government wanted to free the society of casteism.
"Casteism and reservation are two different issues. Some people from the oppressed classes have made progress in the last few years, but majority of them have not," he said.
The minister said the BJP was of the view that reservation should continue until people from backward classes make progress on social, economic, and educational fronts at par with their counterparts from general categories.
