The Centre today informed the Calcutta High Court that steps have been taken to repatriate 319 foreign nationals, including 313 Bangladeshis, who were in correctional homes in West Bengal after completion of their jail terms.
The Centre submitted an affidavit before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalyo Bagchi stating that talks were being held by both the Union Home Ministry and External Affairs Ministry with the Bangladesh government for sending back their nationals.
Appearing for the Union of India, counsel Sanjay Bardhan submitted that apart from the Bangladeshis, there were two Myanmarese, two Nigerians, one Ukrainian and one national of Lesotho in correctional homes in the state.
Satisfied with the report, the court directed that the matter would come up for hearing again after eight weeks, when the progress of the repatriation of the foreign nationals, who have served their terms would be taken up.
