With just a week left for the deadline for recruitment of trained teachers to end, the Centre today indicated relaxation of rules for recruitment for some states which have demanded so.
The latest demand came from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who, in a letter to the HRD Ministry yesterday, requested appointment of untrained teachers for a while as West Bengal is continuing to face severe shortage of teachers in its schools.
The letter cited the example of some states which have already got relief from the Centre.
When referred to her letter, officials in the HRD Ministry indicated some relaxation to such states.
The RTE Act had set two deadlines -- March 31, 2013 for infrastructure and March 31, 2015 for teachers to attain minimum qualifications (pass Teachers' Eligibility Test).
As per the Centre's rule, teachers without training beyond 31 March, 2014 will not be considered for appointments. As per this rule, teachers teaching from Class 8 are required to be trained.
