Centre plans drugs de-addiction facility in every district

Stepping up efforts to fight drug addiction, the central government is planning to ensure that the facility of de-addiction centre is available in every district and there are appropriate facilities for highly vulnerable groups like spouses and children of addicts.
The plans were shared by the Social Justice Minisry during the National Consultative Committee here with states and other stakeholders.
The Government is keen to ensure the facility of de-addiction centres in each district and increasing the number of Regional Resource and Training Centres (RRTCs), the Ministry officials said in the meeting.
"There is need to establish appropriate facilities for highly vulnerable groups like spouses and children of addicts, street children, homeless, beggars, people living in slums and sex workers etc," Social Justice Secretary Anita Agnihotri said.

She added the ministry alongwith various stakeholders is working on to evolve and strengthen appropriate models for the prevention of alcoholism, drug and substance abuse, treatment and rehabilitation of drug dependent individuals.
At the same time, under its aegis the Social Justice Ministry may establish an accreditation system facilities offering services connected with drug abuse.
Social Justice Ministry is the nodal ministry for drug demand reduction. It coordinates and monitors all aspects of drug abuse prevention which include assessment of the extent of the problem, preventive action, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, dissemination of information and public awareness.
The Ministry also provides community-based services for the identification, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts through voluntary organisations.
