"Under the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, import of hilsa and other fish from Myanmar enjoys concessional rate of duty and the item is free for import requiring no specific permission for its import from Myanmar," Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said in a recent letter to Banerjee.

"As such, any interested importer or company may freely import hilsa and other fish from Myanmar, subject only to the sanitary requirements," the letter said.

"Please do let me know if the importers from West Bengal face any specific difficulty in this regard," Sharma wrote in response to an earleir letter from the chief minister.
