Union Food and Public Distribution Secretary Sudhir Kumar announced this after inspecting 24 silos constructed by the Adani Group in Solumajra near here.
Noting that more such modern warehouses were the need of the hour, Kumar said that proper storage facility was crucial for ensuring that the foodgrains lasted longer and were protected from unfavourable weather conditions.
Kumar added that he was reviewing the mechanism of transfer of wheat to various depots located in Mumbai and southern parts of the country through railways.
Spread over 22 acres, the Solumajra warehouse was started as pilot project in 2005 and has a storage capacity of about 2.25 lakh metric tonnes.
It will act a base depot from where wheat will be sent to depots located in New Mumbai, Hugli, Chennai, Coimbatore and Mangalore.
