Like many other denizens of Delhi, Harish Kumar, too, had installed CCTV cameras at the gates of his residence. But the alleged leader of a chain-snatching gang was not worried about thieves striking, he wanted the CCTV cameras to warn him in case police came calling.
Harish (28), however, ran out of luck when he was arrested from Samshan Ghat on the Gazipur Road-Kondli by Delhi police Crime Branch officials along with three associates, Sadiq Gazi alias Sonu (24), Mohit (23) and Mohan alias Munna (22).
The four were arrested on Tuesday after the Crime Branch team received a tip-off as to their location.
On the instance of the gang members, police also arrested an alleged receiver of stolen material, Sandip Patil (22), from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
With the arrest of the gang members, police claimed to have worked out 22 cases. They recovered two motorcycles, eight gold chains, four gold bangles, one gold necklace set, 12 mobiles, LED TV, washing machine, music system and other items, worth Rs 6 lakh, from their possession.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Ravindra Yadav, said that upon questioning, the gang members told them that Harish was their leader and they were involved in a series of chain-snatching offences in Delhi/NCR.
The gang has committed over 30 chain/mobile snatchings in New Delhi, Mayur Vihar, NOIDA, Ghaziabad, Anand Vihar, Sunlight Colony, Ashok Nagar, etc., police said.
"To avoid police, Harish had installed CCTV cameras at the main gate of his house. To conceal their identities, he had procured a mobile phone SIM card against a fake voter ID card," Yadav said.
