Chandigarh railway station chosen for redevelopment

Chandigarh railway station here has been selected by the Centre for redevelopment as per international standard.
Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC) in consultation with a German consultant specialising in this field, has prepared a concept plan in this regard, an official spokesman said in a release here.
The Chandigarh Administration has accorded in principal approval to the IRSDC proposal which will prove to be a land mark decision in the modernisation of Chandigarh railway station, a railway official said.
This shall be a self financial project through commercial development of 2.5 million sq.Fts including hotels, he said.
The development would be restricted to ground plus four floors and shall be done in accordance with the prevailing regulations of the Chandigarh Administration and as per the provision of the Chandigarh Master Plan 2031, he said.
The plan have 15 acres reserved for warehousing which was the need of the city as projected in the notified CMP 2031, he said.

The redevelopment plan would provide state-of-the-art international facilities to the passengers and daily commuters, it will also generate employment as a modern signaling equipment factory.
The planning for main approach road to Chandigarh Railway Station shall provide for widening upto 60 meters within railway land.
For the convenience of public, an underpass has been proposed which will link existing alternate route from Industrial Area Phase-I and road coming from Panchkula between Sector 17/18, he said.
This underpass will also ease traffic on the Chandigarh Kalka route.
