Chandigarh's Government Model School made it to the quarterfinals of the 54th Subroto Cup football tournament, courtesy a superior goal difference after holding an impressive Ghazi High School, Afghanistan to a goalless draw here today.
Chandigarh had 12 goals in their two previous matches and conceded just once while the Afghans, despite being a team with more skills and attacking flair, have only four goals in their kitty after winning their two previous matches with an identical 2-0 margin.
Chandigarh will now play strong contenders Government Chawngfianga Middle School, Kolasib, Mizoram in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
This is the Chandigarh outfit's first appearance in the U-14 category after winning the title back in 2010.
The team from Mizoram has been one of the most impressive sides in the tournament so far and Chandigarh have their task cut out if they want it to make it to the semifinals.
It was a grim battle between the stubborn defence of Chandigarh and the skilful Afghan attack. The lads from Kabul hogged the lion's share of possession, but displayed a lamentable tendency of losing their wits in front of goal.
