The revisions, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, were the first since 2004.
"The revision of these norms would provide girls studying in KGBVs with good quality education along with nutritious food.
"Students from disadvantaged and economically weaker sections of society would also be able to pursue elementary education in private schools and promote an equitable society," a government statement said.
The Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) programme is a major flagship programme of the government of India to universalise elementary education in the country, and the main vehicle for the implementation of the RTE Act.
