The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) today asked a TV channel to run scrolls for two days apologising to actress Ranjitha Menon regarding airing of video clips which showed her in bad light.
The self regulatory body of the entertainment TV industry had earlier asked channel STAR Vijay to run an apology scroll every two hours for a period of seven days.
In its fresh order, the BCCC observed that the apology scroll was to a particular individual and not a general apology to viewers.
The matter pertained to a complaint by the actress against the broadcast of certain video clips in a programme titled 'Nadanthadu Enna--Kutramum Pinnaniyum' (What happened--crime and background) telecast last year.
Appearing before the BCCC, Ranjitha claimed the clippings were not authentic. She said the programme was in fact based on hearsay and unverified statement and most of the clippings make references to her. The channel said that it had taken steps to ensure that the programme was not biased or lead the viewers to think in a manner prejudicial to the complainant.
After hearing both sides, the BCCC felt that the programme was in violation of guidelines and asked the channel to run an apology.
The channel, however, filed a submission saying that it was for courts to hold whether the videos were genuine or not and requested that it may be directed to run the apology scroll for one day. The council sought Ranjitha's views who requested that an apology scroll be run for three days.
