The ongoing National School Chess Championship hosted by the Delhi Chess Association ran into trouble today after a number of students fell sick due to excruciating weather conditions coupled with allegations of mismanagement by the state body.
With close to 200 students from various schools across the country participating in the five-day event that started at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today, the arrangements came in for sharp criticism from the parents, who alleged non co-operation on the part of DCA.
"There was tremendous amount of mismanagement on the part of the authorities which resulted in such chaotic situations. More than a national level competition, it looked like a cattleyard. In this extreme Delhi heat, there were no arrangement for fans with ACs not functioning," fumed Dr Shikha Sharma, mother of 6-year-old Ahaan Sharma, a second standard student of Modern School (Vasant Vihar).
"Kids started throwing up and some fainted just within a couple of hours of the start. I am a doctor myself, when I advised them to take precautionary measures, I was rudely ticked off by one of the officials telling me in no uncertain terms that nothing would be done," Dr Sharma stated adding that she was asked to "withdraw her son's registration" if she found the arrangements not in order.
She also alleged that with a lot of girl students participating, there were no proper washroom alloted for them making it even more miserable.
"Moreover, the last date of registration was June 8, but they carried on the registration till today morning. More and more number of people came in which lead to the chaos.
"For hundreds of parents, there were only 20 chairs or so and we were left exposed to the scorching. We take so much pain to train our children, take them to coaching and even spend so much. But if this is the condition of the country then how players will succeed?" she questioned.
The DCA officials however denied all charges stating that "small things happen when such big event are organised."
"See, we organised the event in three halls of the stadium which together has a seating capacity of 548, but thousands of people came in. Quite obviously, the ACs efficiency was reduced as it also has a specific capacity. What can we do?" DCA secretary AK Verma told in his defence.
