The chapel, situated along the road connecting the island to the river front, was inaugurated today with special service for Saint Teresa.
It has the statue of Teresa, whose canonisation was held at Vatican City, at its entrance.
"This is an initiative of the people. The locals took the lead and it was inaugurated today on the day when Mother Teresa attained sainthood. This is the first ever chapel of such kind in the state. I have no idea whether there are any chapels dedicated to Mother Teresa elsewhere in country," Fr Gabriel Coutinho, parish priest from Vasco, told PTI.
Coutinho, posted at Chorao island for eight years before being transferred to Vasco parish, said the chapel will inspire many to emulate Teresa's preaching of serving the needy people.
In his preaching, local priest Fr Minguel Pereira asked people to learn from the life of Teresa who has been engaged in good deeds throughout her entire life.
"The world after becoming technology-savvy has turned indifferent and insensitive towards problems of the people," he said.
