Charges framed against BNP leader now on bail

A court here today framed charges against Bangladesh National Party (BNP) leader Salahuddin Ahmed for illegally entering India without any valid documents, clearing the deck for his trial to start.
Ahmed, who had been arrested on May 11 but later released on bail, deposed before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) KML Nongbri during a hearing.
The court fixed July 30 for recording of evidence of 11 prosecution witnesses of the case, including the investigating officer.
"The court today framed charges against him (Ahmed) under section 14 of Foreigners' Act, 1946," Public Prosecutor I C Jha told newsmen after the court hearing.
Earlier last month, Ahmed, who was arrested on May 11 from Golf Link area of Shillong and charged under section 14 of Foreigners Act, was granted bail (with condition that he could not leave the court's jurisdiction) after furnishing a bail bond of Rs two lakh by his wife Hasina Ahmed and another person who is an Indian citizen.
The BNP leader had also been taken to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) at Mawdiangdiang after arrest.
