Chargesheet against 19 in post civic-poll clash

Kolkata Police today filed charge sheet against 19 people in connection with the post-civic poll clash at Girish Park in the city on April 18 which left a police sub-inspector injured.
The 261-page charge sheet was filed at Bankshal Court, 86 days after the incident.
Of the 19 named in the charge sheet, eight are still absconding. It includes the name of alleged Trinamool Congress arrested activist Gopal Tiwari for orchestrating the attack, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.
Police had seized arms and ammunition from Tiwari's residence.
"IPC Section 147 (punishment for rioting), Section 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), Section 149 (guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), Section 307 (attempt to murder), and Section 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) have been slapped against these persons in the charge sheet," the officer said.
The charge sheet also mentioned that all the 19 people were present at the spot during the incident and had an active role in the shootout.
Sub-Inspector of Girish Park Police Station, Jagannath Mondal, was injured after being hit by a bullet during a clash between two groups at Singhi Bagan soon after the April 18 voting in Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections.
