A 58-year-old retired army officer and his wife were found charred to death inside their house in Korba district of Chhattisgarh today, police said.
"The charred bodies of the couple were found in the bedroom by their maid this morning," said Balconagar Station House Officer, Vivek Sharma.
The deceased duo have been identified as Capt. (retd) Radhelal Chandra and his wife Jaan Bai Chandra (48).
Police said that, prima facie, the case appears to be one of murder. Further details would come to light following the post-mortem and forensic test reports, they added.
Police said that when the domestic help arrived at the Chandras' residence this morning, she found smoke emanating from the bedroom. Police were called when the deceased duo's younger son, Mahendra, who was on night duty at the Balco plant, returned home a little while after the maid had raised the alarm.
While Radhelal's body was found partially burnt, his wife's body had been completely charred, Sharma said. Radhelal's body has been sent to a local hospital for post- mortem while his wife's body has been sent to Raipur, he added.
"The reason behind the death was severe burns, but the duo also had injury marks on the back of their heads, which indicates foul play," he said.
A case has been registered and a probe is on in connection with the case, he added.
