Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said that INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala should step down from the post of the Leader of Opposition in the wake of his conviction in a teachers' recruitment scam.
"It should be left to him (Om Prakash Chautala) whether to continue as the Leader of Opposition or not...Morality demands he (Chautala) should resign," Hooda said while participating in a discussion in the state assembly on an adjournment motion submitted by Congress MLA Sampat Singh on uprightness and probity in public life in connection with the issue.
Hooda said that no Congress MLA ever asked for the resignation of O P Chautala when the JBT teachers' recruitment case was being heard in the Court and the INLD chief was not convicted.
Referring to the alleged campaign launched by the Opposition INLD, in which it has accused Hooda and the Congress party for misusing the CBI, leading to the conviction of Chautala, Hooda said that if the INLD has any proof to support the allegation, their MLAs should quit and come for an open debate.
Stressing that he is an elected representative of the people, Hooda said, "In case the INLD has any doubt, all legislators of the party should resign and seek a fresh mandate. This will clear everything."
The INLD MLAs will not do so because the Opposition party is not prepared to quit the office of the Leader of Opposition, Hooda said, adding that if it happened, not even half of the INLD legislators will be elected.
