Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan will continue in his post in Maharashtra, the Congress high command today said as it ended the suspense over the leadership issue in the poll-bound state.
"There will be no change in Maharashtra. The chief minister will continue," highly-placed party sources said as they put an end to the speculation that Chavan was on his way out in the wake of the party's dismal showing in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
The signal from AICC came after the chief minister met Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today.
Chavan had yesterday called on Congress President Sonia Gandhi and later said he had a "very good meeting" with her during which he discussed the party's readiness for the October Assembly elections in Maharashtra.
Following the party's rout in the general elections, a section of its leaders in Maharashtra had sought Chavan's removal from the post of chief minister.
