"The tremors that were felt in Chennai were of very low intensity," a senior IMD official in-charge of seismology monitoring told PTI.
"The intensity is obviously less as it depends on the distance from the epicentre of the earthquake," he added.
"The intensity of tremors is also determined by a host of other factors including presence of rocks and fault line," he said.
"People can feel the tremors well only if it exceeds the moderate level of five on the Richter Scale."
