Chidambaram and Chavan deliberated on the steps being taken in Naxal-affected areas and also the general law and order situation in the state, sources said.
The meeting also comes in the backdrop of the murder of a key terror suspect in Pune's Yeravada jail last week.
Home Minister R R Patil and Minister of State for Home Satej Patil were not present in the meeting.
The Chief Minister's office merely said that Chavan and Chidambaram had a closed-door meeting at Sahaydri Guest House.
