Calling on the international community to back its crackdown on East Turkestan Islamic Movement, an extremist group active in the restive Xinjiang province, China said there should be concerted efforts to neutralise the influence of terrorist groups on the Internet.
Chinese police have found that the ETIM, a terrorist organisation on UN-list has been inciting terrorism through the Internet in recent years, Hua Chunying, Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
Its cyber-terror activities not only encouraged terrorists and extremists inside China but also damaged the international and regional counter-terrorism situation, she said.
Said to be an al-Qaeda backed organisation, ETIM is fighting for the independence of Xinjiang, which is in turmoil for several years due to conflict between native Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese settlers.
Hua called on the international community to implement a UN General Assembly resolution on the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy to make joint efforts in combating cyber-terrorism.
