In a rare case, a 47-year-old Chinese woman has given birth to a second child using the embryo she and her husband froze ten years ago at a local hospital, state-media reported today.
In 2005 the woman, surnamed Huang from Qingdao, a major city in east China's Shandong province, was 37 and could not get pregnant despite being married for five years.
The couple turned to the Qingdao Women and Children's Hospital Reproductive Centre to help give birth to a test-tube daughter.
They also paid to freeze unused embryos, state-run China Daily reported.
As China loosened its policy on family planning, the couple is now eligible to have a second child. They visited the hospital in February to activate the frozen embryos.
It's the first such successful case in Qingdao and also a rare case in China.
