Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of leaders of 14 major churches in the state, today urged the government not to lift prohibition on liquor.
MKHC, headed by the Presbyterian Church Mizoram Synod Moderator Rev K Lalhmuchhuaka, urged the state government to continue with the enforcement of the dry law imposed in the state on February 20, 1997.
"We found it regrettable that the state government had intentions to lift the prohibition while the MKHC was standing firm on its stance on liquor and prohibition," the church leaders said.
MKHC held that drinking is against the teachings of the Bible and lifting of prohibition would be disastrous for the people of Mizoram.
They urged the state government to make the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1955 more stringent and enforce it more strictly.
