Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan today denied allegations the CIA had illegally hacked computers used by US Senate staff members probing a controversial interrogation program.
"Nothing could be further from the truth," Brennan said at an event organised by the Council on Foreign Relations. "We wouldn't do that."
Brennan spoke shortly after the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Dianne Feinstein, delivered a scathing rebuke to the spy agency, saying it had likely broken the law in searching a computer drive used by the committee's staff members.
The CIA director said investigations by the Justice Department and the agency's inspector general would ultimately determine if there was any wrongdoing by his employees or Senate staffers.
The CIA chief, formerly the top counter-terrorism adviser to President Barack Obama, said the agency was not out to "thwart" the senate committee's report and hoped to move on from the issue.
"We want this behind us," he said. "We have engaged with them extensively in the past year.
