Heeding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call, industry body CII today appealed to its members to give up cooking gas subsidy.
"The 'Give It Up' campaign is a novel way to strike the conscience of the citizens. I appeal to CII members to pledge to give up their LPG subsidies," CII President Sumit Mazumder said at the National Council meeting of the industry body in Mumbai.
The new government has been working towards effective targeting of subsidies and welfare measures for the benefit of the economically weaker sections, the Confederation of Indian Industry(CII) said in a statement.
After the Prime Minister appealed to the citizens to give up their LPG subsidies on a voluntary basis, around 6.5 lakh consumers complied resulting in savings of about Rs 300 crore, it added.
Modi had launched the 'Give-it-Up' campaign in March , nudging the well-to-do, like Anil Ambani, to give up LPG subsidies.
