The paramilitary force is looking to ascertain the full facts of the case and also the possible criminal involvement of its other personnel in the incident.
Two CISF officials stationed at the Mumbai airport were among five persons arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence yesterday for their alleged involvement in a gold smuggling racket. Over 10 kg of gold worth Rs three crore was seized from the five men.
"An inquiry has been ordered into the entire incident and the two troopers arrested by DRI have been suspended pending the inquiry and investigation," CISF Deputy Inspector General (Operations and Intelligence) Jaideep Prasad told PTI.
Prasad said the Director General of the force has taken a serious view of the incident and a thorough probe would be conducted to ascertain the facts of the case, including the possible involvement of its other troopers posted at the sensitive airport.
The DRI in Mumbai had yesterday said that they had "busted a major gold smuggling racket with the arrest of five persons including two officials of the Central Industrial Security Force" adding that more CISF personnel are under scanner in this connection.
Explaining the modus operandi of the accused, DRI officials had said that the smugglers would inform the CISF officers through "carriers" about the flight they have taken and its arrival at the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport.
The DRI officials had intercepted one of the CISF officers when he was carrying the bag containing the gold outside the airport last evening.
