City based hospital webcasts cancer surgery

Claimed to be the first of its kind, the city-based Gem Hospital and Research Centre today said it successfully webcast pancreatic cancer surgery live to surgeons across the World.
"This is for the time that such an initiative is undertaken to transmit live surgeries to many surgeons not only in India, but also to various other Countries", Dr C Palanivelu, Chairman of the Centre told reporters here today.
The surgery was performed by a team of doctors led by P Senthilnathan, Head of the Department of Hepato Pancreato and Biliary Surgery, he said.
The department of Liver and Pancreas of the hospital conducted first minimally invasive training course on pancreatic surgery on April 25 and 26, he said, adding, Laparoscopic Whipple's procedure, a complex procedure, was performed and webcast live to wider audience in Japan, Korea, UK and the USA, during the course.
Any surgeon with an internet connection can view the surgery even in the smart phone. The Centre is planning to conduct more such programmes in the future for various cancer surgeries, he added.
