City bus services re-introduced in Dimapur

After a gap of 15 years, Nagaland State Transport department re-introduced the city bus service in Dimapur from Monday.

Initially the bus will operate on the main national highway route from Dimapur to Chumukedima with over 22 stoppages, Transport Minister P Paiwang Konyak after flagging off the service.

The department plans to cover other important locations in the near future, he said.

The transport department will offer free rides to senior citizens in the city bus, the minister said.

"We hope the step will be welcomed by commuters. The fare structure for the other passengers will be reasonable," he said.

Besides the city bus service, Pink bus service, exclusively for women, was also introduced for Dimapur and Kohima on a trial basis.

The Transport minister said the city bus service had earlier been taken off the road due to the shortfall of buses.

Thanking chief minister Neiphiu Rio for re-introducing the service, Konyak said the initiative had been taken by the People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) government.

"Transport is a social service department rendering all possible service to the people without worrying about revenue. At preseent, the department is concentrating more in areas where private bus operators fail to reach," he said.
