Civic bodies should set up their own water supply system: Govt

In the wake of severe drought in several districts, the Maharashtra Government has asked all the municipal corporations in the state to get their own water supply system in place.
"Municipal corporations across the state, including Mumbai, should set up their independent water supply system," Minister of State for Urban Development Bhaskar Jadhav said replying to a debate on Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan- Dombivali and Navi Mumbai in the Legislative Council yesterday.
Jadhav further said that the mono rail and metro rail projects would start this year. "96 per cent of the Rs 2,460 crore monorail project has been completed. Similar quantum of metro rail work has been completed," he added.
The NCP minister expressed concern over the growth of slums in the metropolis. "Those staying illegally should not be spared on humanitarian grounds," he said.
He said that 4.4 per cent population growth has been seen in Mumbai for in the last one decade.
Speaking on health issues, the minister informed the House that the super-speciality Seven Hills hospital in suburban Andheri was not treating the patients from the weaker sections of the society.
